You can not play HD DVD movies in nothing less than an HD-DVD.
You can play Blu-Ray is not anything other than Blu-ray.
However, HD-DVD and Blu-ray to play (and Upconvert) DVD.
Depending on the upscaling player. I have a Toshiba EP-10 and plays HD-DVD. Look for the HD DVD logo on the drive.
HD DVD is not playable in a BD (Blu-Ray) player. Blu-Ray is not on an HD DVD player will play, but BD DVD players upscale too.
Some exceptions are:
LG BH100/200 - A dual-format player has BD and HD DVD logo.
